Gone with the Wind

The spectators sent countless letters to the management expressing their congratulations to a particular performance, also many others were curious to know if this year’s musical-hit would come back the following year. Thus, Gone with the Wind will be put on the bill again, on 18th, 19th and 20th July. There will be some changes in the cast but the Presgurvic-piece will be seen only for the sake of the performances in Szeged with a real festival-cast.

The season will continue with a much expected classical production from a Hungarian composer. It was fifteen years ago that the spectators of the Open-Air Festival had last the chance to see Háry János one of the compositions of Kodály Zoltán. The opera based on Hungarian folk songs tells the story of a boasting veteran and it was on the programme of the Festival in 1938 too. The emblematic performance will be put on stage on 1st and 2nd August in 2014. The Festival invited well-known artists of the genre for opera roles while popular actors for the prosaic ones.

Die Tragödie des Menschen

Das dramatische Gedicht von Imre Madách öffnet die festliche Saison der Freilichtspiele. Die Tragödie gehört zu den am häufigsten auf dem Domplatz gespielten Stücken – sie erschien in 16 Sommern und 61 Aufführungen im Repertoire -, in der ruhmvollen Anfangszeit des Festivals wurde sie fast jedes Jahr aufgeführt: zwischen 1933 und 1939 konnte sie vom Publikum jährlich gesehen werden. Das Stück kehrte in dem zweiten Jahr nach der 20jährigen Zwangspause wegen des Krieges, in den 60er Jahren insgesamt sechsmal, in den 70er und 80er Jahren für je eine Saison auf den Domplatz zurück. Zuletzt konnten es die Zuschauer im Jahre 2000 sehen. Nach Ferenc Hont bekamen viele große Persönlichkeiten die Möglichkeit, die Regie zu führen, wie Tamás Major, László Vámos und Miklós Szinetár. In den Rollen von Adam, Eva, dem Herrn und Lucifer betraten solche Schauspieler die Bühne wie Árpád Lehotay, Anna Tőkés, Lajos Básti, Ferenc Bessenyei, Éva Ruttkai, Miklós Gábor, Imre Sinkovits, Géza Hegedűs D. und Ildikó Bánsági.

Die Regie der Produktion in 2011 wird von Attila Vidnyánszky, der emblematischen Figur der Regisseure mittlerer Generation ausgeführt. Sowohl in 2009 als auch in 2010 konnten die Zuschauer Aufführungen – Sólyompecsenye (Falkenbraten) und Tóték (Die Tóts) - in Újszeged nach seiner Konzeption anschauen. Als die Entfaltung der mit ihm begonnenen künstlerischen Arbeit gilt die prosaische Aufführung auf dem Domplatz. Zur Darstellung der Hauptrollen möchte das Management solche berühmten Schauspieler auffordern, die ihre Darstellungsgabe schon in anderen Gattungen auf dem Domplatz bewiesen haben. Die Tragödie kann zweimal gesehen werden.

Die Rollenverteilungen der Produktionen – sowohl auf dem Domplatz als auch in Újszeged – werden wie gewöhnlich zu Anfang des nächsten Jahres, am Ende des Engagements veröffentlicht.

Porgy and Bess and the Phantom of the Opera at the Szeged Open-Air Festival

Three productions out of two: this is how the program of the Szeged Open-Air Festival was transformed, as it was told at a press conference held by the new management today. The Kung-Fu Legend dance show was replaced by a real opera rarity: Gershwin’s composition, Porgy and Bess is arriving from the United States. The Verdi-Wagner Gala was relocated into the repertoire of the Gift Concert, with Ilona Tokody and Mária Temesi in the leading roles. The audience can enjoy the musical-concert version of The Phantom of the Opera as a guest performance of the Madách Theatre.

Szeged is the only place to hear “Summertime” this summer

This August, the Szeged Open-Air Festival will be offering up a real treat to fans of opera, jazz and gospel music: the city’s Dóm Square will be the one venue in Europe to hear the classic melodies from Porgy and Bess – including the popular “Summertime”, which has inspired revision and reworking by countless jazz, pop and classical musicians over the years. George Gershwin’s opus, which has not been performed on Hungarian stages for decades, comes to Szeged audiences for two performances in a production by a New York-based opera company.
