The Marriage Market

Written by
In 2013 the season at the Dóm Square starts on July 5th with the operetta of Victor Jacobi entitled The Marriage Market (Leányvásár), which will be put on the stage as the own production of the festival. Similar to the highly successful Magnate Miska (Mágnás Miska) in 2012 this play also operates with the comic turn of disguise, however this time it is not the servant who becomes master but quite the contrary. Disguised as a dirty tramp Tom Migles wins the hand of the daughter of the opposing family, that of the haughty Lucy Harrison, who as a punishment is given in marriage to the last lad of the village. The piece will be included in the programme of the Open Air Festival in two other evenings after the first performance.

Gone with the Wind

Written by
The season continues with a première in Hungary, namely with the latest musical of Gerard Presgurvic, the composer of Romeo and Juliet, which was also presented at the Open Air Festival in 2005 with huge success. The opus entitled Gone with the Wind has lately been proclaimed the most successful movie and the most popular literary work of all times. In addition to the love thread, the story of Scarlett O’Hara draws a vivid picture of the American Civil War as well as the conflict between North and South. The musical, which first was presented in Paris in 2003 with huge success, is staged by the Open Air Festival in Szeged together with the Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre. The audience can see the piece which promises to be sensational on July 26th, 27th, August 2nd and 3rd.

Stephen, the King

Written by
As the closing of the season on 17th, 18th and 20th August the audience can see Stephen, the King, the national rock-opera celebrating its 30th anniversary. The piece is almost indispensable from the programme: The audience in Szeged demands the cult piece every year, which is now put on the stage of the Dóm Square in an unconventional conception and with a live band.

Zorba, the Greek

Written by
The next season starts with a ballet-performance, Zorba, the Greek which can be seen on 4th and 5th July. The choreography to the music of Mikis Theodorakis, which became world-famous after the film had been rewarded with three Oscars, and also the libretto were elaborated by Harangozó Gyula, the arts director of the Szeged Open-Air Festival. One of the matters of curiosity of the performance in co-operation with the Ballet of Győr is that a compelling sight, never seen in Szeged so far, will welcome the spectators. Dmitrij Simkin, the stage designer visualised a complicated, geometric, almost cubist space which is made exciting by its multi-step structure, on the one hand, and by a special 3D-projection, on the other hand. This latter one is able to execute unbelievable visual effects, besides its scene-underlining function. The Zorba will be a real festival-performance where even the Szeged Folk Dance Group will take its part.

Czardas Queen

Written by
On 11th and 12th July the Czardas Queen, Kálmán Imre’s operetta-hit will be on stage which was last seen on Dóm Square about a decade ago. The performance will be carried out in co-operation with Budapest Operetta Theatre. There has been no performance on Dóm Square in this genre from the theatre of Nagymező Street for years the company of which is a popular guest in several countries as the „ambassador” of operetta. The production will be put on stage in an all-star cast, in a modern form, but holding respect for the rules of this genre, and finally, on a high level common to the Operetta Theatre. The story takes place in the first world war, and though it is not emphasized in general, this year’s concept somehow focuses on it on the occasion of the anniversary of the cataclysm.
